چکیده

1. ABSTRACT There are many reports of patients who, after sustaining brain damage, exhibit a selective recognition deficit for certain categories of object. There has been much controversy as to whether this is informative about the neural organisation of knowledge in the human brain. In this paper we describe an unsupervised neural network model that is trained to process images from a variety of different object categories. Analysis of the unsupervised representations reveals some interesting distinctions between different classes of object. We contend that this model indicates a natural perceptual distinction between certain object categories, which may become exaggerated by the effects of human brain damage.

Unsupervised object discovery via self-organisation

Object discovery in visual object categorisation (VOC) is the problem of automatically assigning class labels to objects appearing in given images. To achieve stateof-the-art results in this task, a large set of positive and negative training images from publicly available benchmark data sets have been used to train discriminative classification methods. The immediate drawback of these methods ...

Category-specific visual agnosia: lesion to semantic memory versus extra-lesional variables in a case study and a connectionist model.

There is a current debate on the causes of category-specific agnosia. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of lesional and extra-lesional variables on object recognition. Extra-lesional variables, such as visual complexity or familiarity, are factors that influence recognition. Using a connectionist model based on study, we provide evidence that extra-lesional variables can yield di...

Animals and artifacts may not be treated equally: differentiating strong and weak forms of category-specific visual agnosia.

We examined a categorical dissociation hypothesis of category-specific agnosia using hierarchical regression to predict the naming responses of three agnosia patients while controlling a wide variety of perceptual and conceptual between-category differences. The living-nonliving distinction remained a significant predictor for two of the patients after controlling for all the other factors. For...

Shared features and similarity : implications for category specificity and normal recognition

Patients with category-specific visual agnosia (CSVA) often exhibit a disproportionate difficulty recognizing objects from biological categories due (in part) to the fact that exemplars from biological categories tend to be visually and conceptually more similar. Similarity is often conceived of as a pairwise property (i.e., in terms of distance in a psychological space matrix), but may be more...
